Museum of Contemporary Art
Like the name suggests, this museum located in the Art Deco-style former Maritime Museum building is all about modern art. With more than 4,000 works of art at any given time including paintings, sculptures and sketches, there’s always something to inspire you creatively. This museum, dedicated to collecting and exhibiting contemporary art from across the world, also has free kids’ programs. Try the Art Safari program which introduces kids aged 3-5 to current exhibitions and has them getting messy making art in the studio. There are also school holiday programs like the Contemporary Kids drop-in program which allows you and your kids to make art together.
Walsh Bay
Located near the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Walsh Bay is the home to many famous and internationally renowned performing arts companies. You can find the Sydney Theatre Company, Bangarra Dance Theatre, the Sydney Dance Company and more. Sydney Opera House

State Theatre
In the city centre and only minutes taxi or train away from The Russell is the ornate State Theatre, nicknamed the Palace of Dreams when it opened in 1929. Another grand 1920s venue is the Capitol Theatre in Haymarket, a short walk from delicious Chinatown. The ICC Sydney hosts some of the world’s most famous musicians and is located a quick ferry ride away in Darling Harbour, and the Sydney Lyric is in neighbouring Pyrmont.
Museum of Sydney
Built on the grounds of the first Parliament House of Modern Sydney, featuring photography exhibitions, workshops and more. Today, through a diverse and changing program of exhibitions and events, the Museum of Sydney explores the stories of this city from its origins to today, while the remains of the original building can be glimpsed through glass openings in the museum forecourt and foyer.
Art Gallery NSW
Alongside the permanent collection are regularly changing temporary exhibitions – more than 30 each year – including flagship annual exhibitions such as the Archibald Prize and ARTEXPRESS. Established in 1871, the Gallery is proud to present fine international and Australian art in one of the most beautiful art museums in the world. Admission to the Gallery is free, as are our permanent galleries and most exhibitions and events.
